Albacore TunaThe albacore has several local names depending on where you fish from. No matter what you call him, the albacore is a great game fish and can be very abundant. If you catch one albacore the chances are that there are many more waiting to jump on a lure or bait as they often travel in large schools.Dark metallic blue on the back, they blend to a silvery white on the sides and belly. They lack the pretty yellow finlets of many other tunas, but may exhibit a beautiful neon blue splash of colour down the side when excited or freshly caught. The best way to identify an albacore is by the extremely long pectoral fin. Albacore roam the clear blue tropical waters of the Atlantic but makes seasonal migrations in colder zones and can be caught in the same area as yellowfin tuna. A record fish of 88 pounds 2ounces was landed in Gran Canaria. |
