Yesterdays prophecy certainly came true as Brian did indeed hook into a very large marlin today. Incredibly, five days after brother Kevins 700 pounder,Brian's hookup was also at 10.00am, took exactly the same 65 minutes to bring to the boat, and was identical in every way - length, girth and weight. To be sure it wasn't the same fish we even looked carefully for the tag from before but fortunately there wasn't one! The williamson big blue cavitator was removed and the fish released non the worse for it's capture.

Today it was Kevin Ash and his brother Brian's 6th day fishing with us.
After the bad weather had cleared we headed out, around about 10.00am we hooked up with a Blue Marlin but the fish took a line which was out for small Tunas so it was a 30 lbs class outfit. Unfortunately the Marlin cut the line down near the lure with its bill, so bad luck Brian.
Then 10 mins later we had a Blue Marlin up attacking a lure which was in close to the boat. After beating the lure with its bill the fish decided to take it. Then after approx 5 mins the hooks came out of the mouth.
Sorry Brian not your day there is always tomorrow!

Around 10.55am we had a hook up with a Blue Marlin, the fish took about 500m of line and then gone.
Then later on in the afternoon we had a double hook and as you can imagine this was pretty amazing. All the water at the back of the boat turned white and then we heard the screaming of reels. One of the Blue Marlin got off after running 400m of line off, so Kevin Boerboom got in the chair and started to fight this other Marlin. After 20 mins the fish was at the back of the boat and then the hooks slipped out and the fish was gone. ( unlucky Kevin )

Comment.
I have been reading recent reports of various boats in Gran Canaria "boating" a number of Marlins and Spearfish. I feel I must comment on how disgusted I am by this. Note that every Marlin over 200 lbs is FEMALE.

This picture depicts a large Marlin (approx 200 kgs),caught and killed by a private boat and brought into Puerto Mogan. I am sick and tired of Dolphin trips, catching small Dorado and Bonito/Skipjack Tunas. So why not leave the wife/partner and kids by the pool, lets get out to the 500/1000 metre mark and do some serious Marlin fishing. Please note only serious fishermen need apply!!!(max six anglers per trip guaranteed)
We of course on Lucky Ruby G observe the Bill Fish Foundation ideal with tag and release for all billfish.

Hi fellow Sportfishermen,
Recently I have been asked by prospective clients to provide a check list of points to consider before a trip on a big game charter boat.
Here are some of my thoughts on the questions that you should ask and have answered before you decide to spend your hard earned money.
*is tag & release practised for all billfish?
*when is the best time to come?
*what fish are in season and is the fishing trolling or bottom fishing?
*what tackle do you have on board and in what classes?
*what are the weather conditions likely to be?
*what about beginners/children - is instruction available?
*can you put me in touch with previous fishing clients?
*can you or do you fish under IGFA rules?
*can I have a fish to eat?
Make a point of speaking to the skipper before you go out. Explain what it is that you would like to catch and your level of experience. Inform the skipper that you do not want to be knocked around at the 2000 metre mark if the fish are not there and that you would prefer to fish calmer waters.
You have chartered the boat to have fun not to be seasick- ask the skipper for options.
When you step aboard listen to the safety briefing and ensure that your details are entered on the passenger list and be conversant as to where all the emergency items are stored and also where you can stand or sit whilst the boat is under way.
Talk to the skipper or deckie. Ask questions like "what happens when a rod goes off"- the deckie should give you a complete demonstration of picking up a rod and moving it to the fighting chair, how to clip the bucket seat to the harness lugs of an 130lb or 80lb class reel. The last thing that the crew wish is for a fish to be lost because of confusion on the deck.

This week has been another sucessfull one for "Lucky Ruby G". On Friday 13 April 2007 (unlucky) "Lucky Ruby G" went out to the 2000/3000 fathom line to get out past the dolphins around the 500/1000 fathom line. We were trolling 8 rods with a mix of islanders and squids. We heard a snap from the right rigger and the penn 30lbs class reel screamed off. After 20 mins we had a huge albacore tuna to the side of the boat, estimated to be around 70lbs. Then on the way in we saw 3 huge whales twice the size of the boat.
On Thursday 19 April 2007 this week we went out trolling around the 500/1000 fathom meter line and boated 2 nice skipjack tuna and lost another. It was reported that Lucky Ruby G was the only boat that day to catch any fish on the troll.

This week has been a pretty good one for "Lucky Ruby G"
We encountered atlantic bonito, blonde ray, lizard fish, octopus and cuttlefish.
The atlantic bonito were taken on the troll with some of our famous lures.
You normally think of the lizard fish being annoying but this one was definitely not! It must have been about 3 kg's, so it was very big for the species. New boat record!!
Then we had quite a pleasant surprise with 3 octopuses coming into the boat.
All in all a good week.
